TYPES OF ANIMAL ABUSE & CRUELTY

In this page, I will introduce to you guys about animal abuse and the difference between animal abuse with animal cruelty acts along with their examples just to give you a better insight on this matter. From our previous blog post, we have briefly explained what animal cruelty/abuse is. But do YOU know that there are many types of these cruelty acts are? For that, this blog post would further explain and expose the types of these cruelty acts. Let’s dive in!

As you may see that the world is dealing with an unprecedented spike of animal abuse and animal cruelty cases recently. Many people are misunderstood that these two acts are the same, but it is actually two separate acts that have a slight difference in both of them. While animal cruelty focuses on acts of violence or neglect perpetrated against animals, animal abuse includes both deliberate harms done to an animal as well as the failure of taking care of an animal’s well being. Some examples of animal cruelty are dog or cockfighting, and animal neglect where its necessities such as their food, water or shelter are being denied. Meanwhile, the act of direct hitting them or physically hurt them in any way is considered as animal abuse. Here are some examples of these acts to understand it better.

First, let’s begin by learning two different types of these cruel acts. As you may know, active and passive are two different categories in matters. Animal abuse and cruelty cases are also being implicated by these two “adjectives”.


Active cruelty

Active cruelty is a type of abusement that focuses on malicious intent where the animal is getting abuse intentionally and sometimes refers to Non-Accidental Injury (NAI). Some examples of active cruelty are physical abusement towards the animal. These acts are considered as early signs of severe damage from the psychology aspect as this type of cruelty are made intentionally. Moreover, these can cause severe and fatal injuries to animals as it can be traumatizing for the animal to recover—for example, a recent viral case of an elephant killed by firecrackers stuffed in a pineapple. Though the act is to threaten or to warn, the fact is, it can be handled in a smarter way which did not include serious physical injury or death count of an animal who just innocently wanted to eat for their life.

Active cruelty towards animals could occur for many reasons. Some of the reasons are the intention of threatening, warning or to simply ‘flex’ their power and inferiority towards animals. Many cases in this type of cruelty acts are also related to the abuser’s intent to intimidate their victims into being sexual abused, remain silent, or simply psychologically abusing the victim.

Passive Cruelty

Now you know what is active cruelty, but what about passive cruelty? Here is an example, an owner caged his/her pet dog in the kennel without any food or water supplied. A neglection case could actually cause severe suffering and pain throughout the lacking of the action itself. Moreover, animal neglection could lead to starvation, dehydration or parasite infestations which is why it's considered a form of cruelty.

Some reasons that lead to neglection are mostly of their financial situation such as an owner feels powerless due he/she is unable to feed the pet due to financial issues or perhaps the allergic reaction from the owner. Yes, as sad as it may sound, some people are just not destined to be an owner of a certain type of animal such as cats or birds as it can cause them severe allergic reactions to their body.

ANIMAL ABUSE

A pregnant elephant was killed by firecrackers

Recently, on June 8th, 2020, the world is shocked by the act of killing a pregnant elephant by three men in India. One of the three suspects has been arrested for further investigation. The elephant has been spotted in a river on May 25th with severe injuries around its mouth. The forestry department, along with a veterinary doctor, concluded that treatment was not possible and the elephant had died in standing position in the end. It was found out that the elephant had eaten coconuts and other fruits stuffed with powerful firecrackers in it. The officials believe the motive for their act was to protect their farm from entering by the same elephant.



The jaw of a pregnant cow was blown off

After the pregnant elephant incident, the world once again surprised by the news about a case of a jaw of a pregnant cow was blown off by explosive-laden wheat-flour ball. The cow’s owner, Gurdayal Singh, uploaded a video of the injured bovine on social media. The video soon went viral, and people demanded strict action against the miscreants who fed the cow with firecrackers.

The animals abandoned during the lockdown

As we feared, in the early of 2020, Coronavirus has been declared as a pandemic, and many countries of the world had released the lockdown order aka MCO (Movement Control Order). During the lockdown order, animal neglect cases have been rising along with divorce cases. The RSPA had announced the rising number of abandoned animal. Berkshire had reported 18 cases of abandoned animals since the lockdown started at the end of March. Besides that, the charity organization had also received more than 1,600 reports overall to its cruelty hotline of abandoned animals across England and Wales in that time which averages 40 cases per day.



The RSPCA has dealt more than 21,000 of animals cruelty since lockdown

The RSPCA has helped 21,137 suffering animals since lockdown began, an average of one every two minutes. The British animal charity has faced issues ranging from abandoned kittens, and stranded ducklings to rabbits found amongst fly-tipped waste and a pheasant left trapped in the grille of a car.




Animal abuse is sad, but it can be stopped if you know what to look for. This type of cruelty can be in multiple forms. Let’s further read to know the details, shall we?

Improper Confinement

Animals have been man’s best friend for a longer time than we can ever imagine. It is good to keep it as a pet, but they are also living beings which requires and demand necessities and care the same as us humans. Having cats and dogs as pets are easy depends on what type of breed you are having BUT keeping the exotic breed types requires extra and tremendous resources. Bear in mind, and if you are keeping an exotic species of an animal as your pet, you should be aware of its particular needs and requirements. Why? Exotic animals often have specific requirements to eat, drink and their living space environment. If you’re unable to fulfil those requirements, then you are basically abusing it. Exotic species of animals require a particular environment, and not being in a cage which confines them from their necessity living space to breathe.



Fighting

Animal fighting cases are one of the most common types of animal abuse. This includes two or more animals to fight each other to death, whether it been trained or intentional. The most common animals used in this cruelty act are cocks and dogs. A particular breed will be the main target as they are more reliable to increase the chance of winning the prize of the bet, which in most cases are money.



Animal Experimentation

As it sounds, animal experimentation is the act of using animals as a subject to test run and research a specific product or to be more precise, a significant number of animals are used as subjects to research the side effects of a product. Common animals such as pigs, or rats usually were used as it’s easy to find, low in cost, and unlimited in number. Although these number of animals are quite significant, the fact that it is also considered as animal abuse cannot be denied. They are being killed by the intention of experimenting while some suffer from starvation for some absurd researches.


Animal Beating

Animal beating is an act of physically injuring an animal which involves hitting, kicking, stabbing, or beating with a blunt object. Beating an animal is a typical animal abuse case, and it could be from merely an act of slap or in extreme cases, slowly torturing them to death. As a result, they tend to be aggressive due to the traumatizing experience of these cruel acts from their owners. Besides that, the animal may become more violent in its personality towards other humans due to its need to be on stay on guard and self-defending themselves by any harmful acts from happening on them.





Reasons for Animal Abuse and Cruelty


We have witnessed many cases of animal abuse and cruelty all around the globe, but what is the reason behind all of these acts? Animal cruelty occurred all because of one similar intention, and that is being selfish for their own needs in forms of violence. The perpetrators might have done this to feel inferior, to have a control on a being or in extreme cases, “for fun” basically. They see these acts as a safe way for revenge or threaten someone who cares about the animal. For example, the act of abandoning animals might occur due to the fact that the owners feel powerless of not able to feed their pets. Meanwhile, the crime of killing animals, as shown in the news is done to plot revenge against the pregnant elephant from entering their farms.
